BOOMTOWN: Seattle Before the Great Fire BOOMTOWN: Seattle Before the Great Fire
Brinkley Gallery
Take a walk in downtown Seattle during the 1880s, the booming decade before statehood and the Great Fire of 1889. Feel the dry wooden sidewalks creak beneath your feet, and hear steamers pulling into Elliott Bay.

Lots of fun stuff for kids.
THE GREAT SEATTLE FIRE THE GREAT SEATTLE FIRE
Carkeek Gallery
While Chicago has Mrs. O'Leary's lantern-toppling cow, Seattle has John Back and a pot of glue. MOHAI stokes the fires of curiosity with the glue pot and other artifacts from the fire that leveled the city on June 6, 1889.

See the 1953 mural by Pulitzer Prize-winning artist Rudolph Zallinger.

When Seattleite Edmund Smith invented the "Iron Chink", which mechanized the processing of salmon, he set off a chain reaction still felt today. SALMON STAKES is a journey through 20th century fisheries, seen through the eyes of the average worker.

Lots of hands-on activities for all ages.

GORILLA IN OUR MIDST: Bobo GORILLA IN OUR MIDST: Bobo
Sophie Frye Bass Library Passage
Seattle's first 20th century celebrity was Bobo the Gorilla, who was raised in a private home and later moved to the Woodland Park Zoo. He appeared in LIFE Magazine, newsreels, and a Bill Cosby record.

Bobo came to MOHAI as taxidermy in 1968, and he's been an icon ever since.
THE B-1: Boeing's First Plane THE B-1: Boeing's First Plane
Boeing Johnson Gallery
Boeing's first plane, the famous B-1 flying boat from 1919, hangs above MOHAI's Hall of Icons in the Boeing Johnson Gallery. The B-1 inaugurated international mail service, with Eddie Hubbard piloting the craft between Seattle and Victoria, B.C., Canada.

The plane was built by the firm that would become aerospace powerhouse The Boeing Company.
Slo-Mo-Shun IV Hydroplane Slo-Mo-Shun IV Hydroplane
Boeing Johnson Gallery
The Slo-Mo invented summer in Seattle after setting the water speed record on Lake Washington and winning the coveted Gold Cup in Detroit in 1950. Her "flying" three-point hull design is still used in modern hydroplanes.

The Slo-Mo was painstakingly restored before returning to MOHAI in 2001.
